LINDSEY COLE MIXED MEDIA WORKSHOP

Lindsey's workshop on 28th January produced lots of multicoloured cockerells. Working from photographs and following demonstrations we used watercolour enhanced , in some cases, with ink and oil pastel.

Lindsey made it a hugely enjoyable day.

She runs courses and workshops in her studio near Ringwoood.

Here 2012 programme includes: evening classes in watercolour and mixed media and one day workshop topics include: flowers, animals, landscapes, seascapes and Chinese style paintings.

The cost of a Saturday workshop is only £35.

The End of an Era with the Passing of Reg Whiting

Founder member of Totton Art Society Reg Whiting has been unwell and passed away in a care home on Sunday 8th January 2012. The society exists thanks to Reg's enthusiasm and hard work. He commanded everyone's respect and remained Vice-President for several years into the twenty-first century. In 2004 the society created a best in show award in his honour. Here is an article written by Reg in 2003.

"The Origins of the Totton Art Society

It all started from the evening art classes at Totton Grammar School where we painted with help from Mr Lewis, the Art Master. After about five years of this, which included several terms of life classes with a variety of nude models, a number of us decided to start an art society, to encourage new members and to exhibit our efforts. I am now the only remaining founder member left in the society. We held our exhibitions in an upstairs room of the present Totton Council offices, until we were moved out to accommodate the council staff expansion, to our present venue. We had demonstrations by visiting artists and evenings for criticism. We found that the best method for criticising members’ work was to have a panel of three experienced members who would sit in the front and discuss each painting. They often did not agree with each other, but nevertheless, their views were all kindly and helpful. I, as Chairman, would summarise their conclusions, and encourage other members to say what they thought

There was Maurice Maynard, a ‘character’ and full-time bait-digger, who produced the most colourful and marvellous abstract paintings. He would never sell any paintings and had unframed paintings stacked around the walls of his house in Totton High Street. We had an elderly lady from Netley Marsh; she always wore a fancy hat with fruit or flowers on it! Her paintings were of the ‘Grandma Moses’ type with funny figures and animals, a lot of flowers and no perspective (which didn’t worry her at all). They were delightful little paintings, which often seem to appeal to people of her age-group. She always made a point of saying how much she enjoyed our meetings and thanking me. Barry Peckham joined us as a young man and was always very serious abut his painting. He soon left us all behind, to take it up as a full-time artist. We also had Rex Trayhorne for a short time. He also took it up professionally. I still see some of our former members who remember those earlier years."

ONE DAY SALE ON 12TH NOVEMBER

Members exhibited over 200 paintings at the society's One Day Sale on Saturday 12th November at the Three Score Club Totton. 19 paintings were sold.

Thanks to Chairman Anne Hamerton, President Ruth Edwards, Honorary Secretary Mary Maskell, Treasurer Glennis Courtney, and Competitions Manager Pat Scammell for devoting their time to sitting in. Grateful thanks, as well, to Bob Hamerton, Mike Maskell, Roy Fisher and Sue Fisher for their assistance.

Unusual individual paintings spotted included:

a blue version of the Eling Boardwalk,

a Christmas Scene by Freddie Springer,

a line drawing by Jean Baker,

a colourful small market scene by Claire Palmer

and

two paintings on stone.

There were also some cards on sale.

We are very grateful to everyone who worked hard to make the sale a success.

NEWS QUIZ MENTION ON 29 OCTOBER

Alan Langford told us that Totton Art Society was mentioned on the News Quiz radio programme on 29th October. The News Quiz is a topical panel quiz show, chaired by Sandi Toksvig, taking its questions from the week's news stories

Right at the end one of the panellists says:

“...a small ad in the New Forest Post sent in by Alistair Dineen.

Totton Art Society demonstration on using mixed media to paint a chicken. Refreshments available.”

Missing out the ‘on how ‘ between on and using sounds funny to non-artists I guess.

JAKE WINKLE WORKSHOP

Jake Winkle gave 14 members a challenging day on Saturday 1st October. The task was to create two watercolour subjects using his methods. He stressed the importance of using an absorbant support, preferably Arches Aquarelle 140 lb. together with Kolinsky sable brushes.

After drawing an accurage outline in pencil, the backgound washes were applied wet in wet. Figures were painted in segments with similar tones but varying hues. Jakes stressed that the consistency should be similar to double cream.

After painting racehorses and jockeys, the group painted a couple of rockhopper penguins.

Everyone appreciated the hard work that Jake had put into the day and surprised themselves with the results at the end of it.

TOTTON ART SOCIETY STALL AT TESTWOOD LAKES

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust held Activities Days at various locations on 4th September to celebrate their 50th Anniversary. Totton Art Society took up the challenge to organise an activity in a marquee. Ruth Edwards prepared landscape paintng worksheets and Claire Palmer created simple templates. The Trust provided furniture, paints, water containers and brushes.

Mary Maskell, Anne Hamerton and Claire Palmer set up the stall with some of their paintings, and sign-board and stayed all day, with additional assistance from Pat Scammell and Di Alexander.

The enthusiasm of the children was heart-warming.

Many children were happy to paint with templates, watched by their parents*.

However most wanted to paint their own picture and were extremely creative.

Many thanks to Claire, Anne and Mary for devoting the day after the end of the Summer Exhibition to Totton Art Society. Your dedication is amazing!

*Parents were asked and gave permission for photographs of the children to be used online.

Few people realise the amount of time and sheer hard work that is spent keping the Summer exhibition running successfully by the following members of the committee:

Glennis Courtney - is the Treasurer and she sat in for many hours. She is also a s skilled salesperson! Here she is with her evocative painting of Jaccarandas.

Mary Maskell's efficient administration and commitment ensured a smooth operation. Here she is with two of her stunning marine paintings.

Chairman Anne Hamerton our 'king-pin' - her feet barely touched the ground during the week. She introduced the society's first 'chip and pin' machine for the exhibtion and Bob assisted with its management online. Here she is with her painting of St. Ives.

100 years ago public benefactor Robert Chipperfield left his art collection to Southampton Corporation and funded the building of the Art Gallery in the Civic Centre. Art Groups from west Hampshire will mount table-top exhibitions in the Central Library Southampton on Saturday 6th August 11.00 a.m. until 3.00 p.m.

Autumn and Winter are George's Favourite Seasons

George Gascoigne enjoys Autumn and Winter landscapes and in May he showed members how to make a ploughed field and a clump of trees into a work of art. George used Atelier Interctive Acrylic paints which enabled him to blend for longer than traditional acrylics.

His sky was washed on as if using watercolour but then, unlike watercolour, white paint was used for the lighter areas. The clouds nearest the horizon had some yellow ochre in them. A distant cliff used dark blue and distant trees were created with purple and burnt sienna. Nearer tree banches used burnt umber. George also uses burnt umber and colbalt blue to create grey. Some greens were mixed using purple and yellow.

Foreground interest was created from dark furrows filled with water reflecting the blue winter sky. George also added a distant flock of birds: very light grey against the medium-toned trees, and dark grey against the white clouds. He finished by scratching out (scraffito) lighter grasses in the foreground, followed by a light wash of burnt sienna.

George loves experimenting and recommends that we set ourselves a time limit when painting, in order to achieve a looser style.

PUT YOUR PERSONALITY INTO YOUR PAINTINGS SAYS HASHIM AKIB

Hashim Akib put expression, passion and personality into his April demonstration painting using acrylics. There were two main stages in the artistic process.

Stage one consisted of broad strokes with one and a half or two inch decorator's brush loaded with more than one un-mixed colour. This is Hashim's favourite technique. The result was vibrant, abstract and chaotic, although he did include some structural marks for use in stage two.

Stage two used more 'normal' colours applied as short rectangular strokes with a one inch brush. He favoured white and lemon yellow in the lightest sections. Sometimes he painted the negative shapes around darkest areas. Muted subtle colours in some sections of the painting show off the stronger brighter colours.

When the painting was finished, it looked like a bright, abstract design until viewed from a distance. From farther back, a woodland landscape miraculously came to life in glowing colours, even though the artist had not needed to view it from a distance himself.

Hashim gave the audience valuable advice about developing a style and selling artwork.

Paint scenes which you find exciting.

Paint faster and express your own personality in the scene.

Paint shapes rather than details.

Let random marks and interesting colour combinations happen.

Do not limit yourself to realistic effects - bold colours sell better!

Be confident and believe your own hype!

Hashim aims to surprise the viewer with his painting and he certainly surprised and delighted us with his fabulous demonstration.

JAKE WINKLE'S SAYS "PAINT IT ONCE "

Jake Winkle is able to paint fast. He demonstrated to Totton Art Society members in January. He aims to apply the paint once and add no more layers - with only minimal blending of damp colours next to each other. Jake limits his colours but uses up to ten different tones. Tone is also used to create a sense of perspective. The strong colours and clean shapes make his paintings design masterpieces.

Firstly Jake painted horses and jockeys using darks first and then adding lighter colours. This is not the traditional watercolour method.

Secondly he painted people. He uses shape to create a sense of movement. This painting shows that legs do not have to be the same length!

Members also enjoyed Jake's stunning array of cards.

We had fun on 8th December in the Palm Room.
Faces were painted on balloons. Henry won the prize for the best face.
Heads were scratched over Di's details of Totton.
There were delicious things to eat at 'Half Time'. Anne kept the wine flowing and Claire and co. kept the tea flowing! A few members snapped up the Keep-For-A-Week palettes that were on special offer at £1 in aid of TAS funds !
The teams found the pictionary sketches of famous paintings easy. Pat Scammell won the prize for her team with her impression of Manet's A Bar at the Folies Bergere. She also managed the bumper raffle - drawing the first ticket herself!
Helen's compilation of brands took longer to do.

Ruth won the Chrismas card competition prize with her delightful winter scene. She was also spotted circulating with a very large box of chocolates.

Finally our esteemed Chairman wished all members a very Happy Christmas and looked forward to seeing everyone back again on 12th January.

TECHNOLOGY AT THE TAS MONTHLY WORKSHOP

Members were able to see Marilyn Allis's demonstration once again projected onto a large screen at the October workshop. The theme was 'putting people in pictures' and many members using figures in their paintings.

ROY FISHER HAMBLE PAINTING HIGHLY COMMENDED

Roy Fisher again had a painting highly commended at another exhibition. His painting "HAMBLE" received the award at the Best of Hamphire Artists (Test Valley) Exhibition at Hillier's Garden. Although it has been removed from sale, the exhibition continues until 3rd October.

Anne Matthews' painting ORANGE BLAZE IN CORNWALL was particularly appreciated by some visitors familiar with that region.

Animal specialist Paula Humphrey sold IN THE SHADE featuring a lion with dappled coat.

David Butcher's ENTRANCE featured colourful dappled stones.

This still life LEMON AND PEARS IN A GLASS DISH by Peter Gurney was much admired.

Distinguished artist Gervaise Gregory Opens 2010 Summer Exhibition

Gervaise Gregory, who has himself produced some of the most delightful watercolours of Eling and Hythe, opened the Summer Exhibition at the Palm Room in Totton & Eling Civic Centre on Thursday 26th August. Gervaise also organises the Art Pavilion exhibition at the New Forest Show.

TAS committe members Patricia Scammell and Glennis Courtney were kept busy selling raffle tickets and paintings on the reception desk.

Members and guests voted for their favourite painting and the winner was Gladioli by Mary Maskell.

HELEN DAVIES organised a grand day out to the SAA's It's All About Art show

Demonstrators performed throughout the day. Mary Maskell loved Mitch Waite's scenes of Provence.

Hashim Akib wowed the crowds with his vivid paintings.

Marilyn Aliss's husband Colin recognised Di's Totton Art Society T-shirt and remembered that they will be coming to Totton for the September demonstration. Next Wednesday's TAS demonstrator Roy Lang was there painting wonderful seascapes.
There was even a Winsor & Newton demonstration on making sable brushes

Audrey Sharrar found Geoff Kersey to be worth watching.

The SAA team offered to take a group picture at the end of the day and they noted our comments. Look out for it in a future issue of PAINT magazine!

David White Demonstration in May

Professional artist David White gave a brilliant demonstration on how to go about painting dogs using acrylics. He demonstrated both a black and a brown newfoundland, showing how he achieved a striking animal portrait.

The advice flowed freely and finally he encouraged everyone not to give up, but to keep trying to paint.

Since he is so busy with commissions these days, we were very fortunate to have him with us again this year.

Thanks to everyone who brought food and raffle prizes, thanks to Pat Scammell for the bumper raffle and most of all thanks to Helen Davies who provided an Art Quiz for the second year running, which was the main event of the evening. Superb questions Helen!

We saw Totton Art Society's spot on the BBC Children in Need local news. Bunny Austin made a very welcome appearance with Mary after a long absence and many Christmas greetings were exchanged. Thanks to all the members who made it such a good evening. Best wishes to everyone for 2010!

Artscape Totton 2009

Helen Davies and I sold 9 Totton paintings on Saturday at £7.50 each making a total of £67.50. People also donated £35.74 via the Children in Need bucket. Together with £74.00 entry fees and no expenses needing to be paid, the Children in Need final total was £240.24.

We held the Children in Need appeal open for TAS members to have the opportunity to buy the remaining paintings at the demonstration meeting on 25th November. Muriel Hiscott also received her prize of 4 porcelain mugs featuring her winning painting that evening.

The Saturday event was filmed by Mr P. Dougherty regional producer for Children in Need, hindered and abetted by his two small sons!

There was a Children in Need report on the South Today programme (BBC1 6-30 – 7-00 pm) on Wednesday 18th November when four views were shown: Nursling Mill by Patricia Osborne, St Matthews Church by Muriel Hiscott, Salmon Leap Bridge by Anne Hamerton, Batts Corner by June Green and Goatee Beach by Ray Barnes.

Thanks to everyone who helped with Artscape, particularly Helen Davies who shared the load, made professional sashes and obtained the mounts free of charge from The Range, Mr David Cottar Manager of The Range and also Mary Austin who dealt with all the publicity and liaising with the BBC, websites and newspapers.

Another successful summer exhibition ended on 5th September 2009. There was a fantastic range of subjects and 46 works of art were sold. Harry Yearsley won the TAS Best Painting award.

Totton artists Paula Humphrey and Glennis Courtney both exhibited at the prestigious Marwell International Wildlife Art Society this year. Totton artist Roy Fisher also exhibited at the Best of Hampshire Artists.

Russ Culver paints animal portraits professionally. In May he painted this dog on Canson paper using charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils.

April David White Workshop

David White had exhibited his artwork at Crufts this year and was subsequently had a full order book of commissions. His Acrylics Workshop was a very special event, not only because he is in demand, but because he gave a superb course for beginner and experienced artist alike. To name just a few activities: we tested our colours for transparency, mixed colours, applied transparent glazes, painted a monochrome portrait and planned a portrait in more detail. It was a superb day and it started me painting in acrylics, enjoying the versatility of the medium.

Stephen Foster has his own individual watercolour technique. At the April demonstration he painted on Arches 114lb Not paper which was wet on both sides and floating on a film of water.

He usually prefers to avoid too much detail in order to produce an atmospheric landscape and particularly admires Turner.

Joe Francis Dowden works with his board horizontal, which posed problems for Harry Yearsley our camera operator, but it enables him to use bold splattering techniques to create texture. He used an Arches 140lb Not support and a strong Cadmium Lemon to create the background glow. His palette is fairly dry so that his washes contain a lot of pigment. He uses the highest quality Neutral Tint in the darkest parts of his paintings in order to create the maximum tonal contrast with the lighter areas - giving the effect of strong lighting.

Multi-Media Workshop for T.A.S. Members 8th March

A workshop at the Palm Room in the Totton & Eling Civic Centre using media such as watercolour and pastel has been organised for 8th March 2008 by Claire Palmer. This is open to T.A.S. Members - cost £5 - yes £5! Experienced T.A.S. artists will be on hand to lead each group.

Workshop 18th April: Horses with Alan Langford

Claire Palmer has arranged a Saturday workshop with equestrian artist Alan Langford on Saturday 18th April at the Palm Room in Totton and Eling Civic Centre.

Alan will be demonstrating horses and we may use watercolours or oils. All full members of T.A.S. may sign up - cost £14 for the day.
