JAMEL AKIB PAINTS 3 OIL PAINTINGS IN APRIL

THREE OIL PAINTINGS OVER THREE OLD WORKS

More than thirty TAS members and visitors had a fabulous evening watching Jamel Akib transform three former paintings on canvas into three vibrant paintings: an elephant, a humming bird and a seascape.

There were few outlines, beginning with patches of paint applied with a two large brushes - one for dark colours and one for light - which gradually evolved into the subject.

Jamel talked about the properties of each colour as he used it. Transparent colour reveal the underpainting and an opaque colour hide it. He mixed his colours on the palette or on the canvas as he painted - he often brushed crimson into very dark brown.,

We also saw him making use of tonal values, warm and cool colours and varied brush strokes. It was a masterly demonstration!
